5 natural remedies for cough in children

It can be hard to keep your child's cough under control, especially when he or she is teething. It's also tough because you want to do everything possible to make your child feel better. There are natural remedies that you can use for coughs in kids and these will help ease symptoms without having to resort to drugs.

Give your child honey

Honey is a natural cough suppressant that can be given in small amounts to children. It is safe for children and can be used to treat coughs and sore throats. Honey is also known as a homeopathic medicine, which means it has no negative side effects but still works to relieve symptoms like coughing or sore throat when taken regularly over time.

Honey may be the best option for your child because it’s inexpensive, easy to find at grocery stores and pharmacies, doesn't require any special equipment beyond what you already have around the house (just add hot water!), tastes sweet enough for kids' palates (but not too much), doesn't require refrigeration until opened—and best of all: many parents report that their kids love the taste.

Steam it out

A humidifier is a great way to add moisture to the air, which helps loosen mucus and makes it easier to cough up. If you don't have access to one, try putting a towel over your child's head while they sleep; this will raise their body temperature and make them sweat more, giving them post-cough relief (and also making them smell like potpourri). Steam for 10 minutes at temperatures of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher—a bowl full of hot water with some tea bags can do the trick as well—then remove the towel when done!

Use salt water

The first step to treating a cough is to keep your child's airway clear. If you have a humidifier, use it at night and throughout the day. If not, try using one of these natural remedies:

Saltwater. Boil water on medium heat until it comes to a rolling boil (about 5 minutes). Add 1 teaspoon salt per cup of water, then let cool before using in an infant or young child who has difficulty swallowing liquids.

Saline nasal spray (such as Afrin). Spray through both nostrils for about 45 seconds either before bedtime or just before going back out into cold weather outside with others who are sick—this will help open up those sinuses so they’re less likely to get clogged again later on!

Try eucalyptus

Eucalyptus is a natural respiratory remedy, for vaporizing or taking as a bath additive and can be used for young children as well.

Consider garlic

Garlic is a natural expectorant, which means it can be used to treat coughs and other respiratory issues. To use garlic for coughs:

Put 2-3 cloves in a cup of water and leave them overnight. The next morning, strain off the liquid and add honey if you'd like. Take this tea twice daily for 3 days (1 week). Then stop taking it for two weeks, then resume once again until symptoms subside completely.
